Head Boom Pro tennis racquet review

Here is my review of the Head Boom Pro tennis racquet, the heaviest racquet in the new Head serie which will be released in January 2022.

With its 632 cm² head size, I expected less power and liveliness and in the end the Head Boom Pro turned out to be quite powerful and very comfortable.

The Head Boom Pro falls into the demanding racquet category, with its heavy weight and medium size, but in this category it is an easy to play racquet that delivers a good amount of power.

The racquet is semi-powerful, the maneuverability is excellent, access to top spin is easy and the racquet is very comfortable.

The new Head Boom serie

The Head Boom serie will be available in January 2022, it does not replace the Instinct serie, to the contrary of what I said in my video review.

At the time I write this articke, this new serie will consist of two racquets :

Here are the specifications of these 2 racquets :

Head Boom MP Head Boom Pro
Weight (unstrung) 295 g. 310 g. / 10.9 oz
Balance 31,5 cm 31 cm / 10 HL
Head size 645 cm² 630 cm² / 98 in²
String pattern 16x19 16x19
Beam width 24 mm / 24 mm / 21 mm 22 mm
Length 68,5 cm 68,5 cm / 27 inches

At the time I write the article, Lorenzi Musetti tests the Head Boom Pro, customized to his needs, to see if he could switch to this racquet.

The shape of the Head Boom tennis racquets

As with the Head Boom MP, Head Boom Pro's shape is slightly rounded at the top.

The frame is a bit in the shape of a drop of water; the frame is widened at the top and tighter in its lower part.

This shape is interesting to :

  • enlarge the sweetspot (the comfort zone),
  • increase tolerance,
  • facilitate access to top spin,
  • increase the power.

Auxetic technology

Head Boom tennis racquets use Auxetic technology, it's the first time it is used in tennis.

This corresponds to the use of materials that have the counterintuitive ability to get fatter when stretched along their length and to become thinner when compressed.

The goal is to have an optimal deformation of the frame to give a maximum of sensations, even on off-center shots, to ultimately increase confidence in the shots played.

This technology is also used to absorb vibrations and provide excellent playing comfort.

The other areas of use are : aerospace, military defense, bio-medical, padel racquets...

What I can say concerning my feelings is that I found the racquet particularly comfortable, very nice feeling at impact, clean and clear feeling, with a nice sound and I think that many chances are that these sensations are linked to the use of this technology.

Head Boom Pro power level

From my very first balls played with the Head Boom Pro, I was surprised by the very good level of power provided by the racquet, which in my opinion provides intermediate / slightly high power for a racquet with such a head size.

My topspin backhand, which is my best shot, is more powerful and has less topspin than my forehand, and my serve is a weak shot for power.

I had the pleasure of finding with the Head Boom Pro an excellent balance between power and control for all of my shots.

I had a slight loss of control on some powerful backhands as well as on the slice backhand, but overall the feeling was very good.

In any case, I did not lack power, the weight helped me to have a good plow through without forcing too much as long as I was in good physical shape.

With a racquet of this weight, it is important to have good technique, a good level of amplitude and looseness, in order to use the weight of the racquet to find power without forcing.

On some forehands where my movement was a little less ample, I still managed to generate a correct power.

I only lost efficiency with the accumulation of muscle fatigue as the 310g weight is a bit too much for me.

Here is a comparison in terms of power with other similar racquets :

More power :

  • Babolat Pure Drive Tour, Pure Aero Tour
  • Babolat Pure Drive VS
  • Head Extreme Pro
  • Tecnifibre TF-X1
  • Yonex EZone 100, VCore 100
  • Wilson Burn

Similar power :

  • Head Speed Pro
  • Wilson Clash 98
  • Babolat Pure Strike 16x19

Less power :

  • Head Prestige Tour, Pro, MP
  • Head Radical Pro, Gravity Pro, Gravity Tour
  • Babolat Pure Strike 18x20, Pure Strike Tour, Pure Strike VS
  • Tecnifibre TF 40, TFight 305
  • Wilson Blade 98 305 g, Pro Staff 97
  • Yonex EZone 98, Ezone 98 Tour, VCore 95
  • Yonex VCore Pro 97
  • Prince Phantom
  • head size < 632 cm²

Overall, the Head Boom Pro therefore offers intermediate power and in the category of racquets weighing between 305 and 315 g, with a head size near 630 cm², it is one of the most powerful.

Head Boom Pro and spins

On my backhand slice, I had very good feelings, a few mistakes sometimes by lack of control, but overall I had good control.

I found the access to top spin really easy for a racket with this head size, I had no difficulty producing top spin on my groundstrokes and on my serve.

Access to the lift is facilitated by :

  • the shape of the frame, slightly rounded at the top,
  • the versatile 16x19 string pattern,
  • the good maneuverability of the racquet, which allows rapid movements (provided you can handle a weight of 310 g).

Maneuverability and stability

I was surprised by the excellent maneuverability that I got with the Head Boom Pro, while having very good stability.

Despite the relatively high weight of 310g, I managed to handle the racket well, with good movement speed.

There is a slight feeling of weight at the head of the racquet, but I didn't have a problem with that; it helped me put weight in the ball and have stability.

It was fine on my two first sessions and I started to get embarrassed in my two last sessions when I was more tired, then it was harder to produce power easily, especially on my forehand.

It is also linked to the technique; my forehand is a shot on which I can lack looseness and amplitude.

Players who are ideally suited for the 310 g weight and who have good loose, rather large swings, will find excellent maneuverability with this racquet.

Comfort, tolerance and sensations with the Head Boom Pro

The racquet is particularly comfortable, with excellent vibration damping.

The shots are crisp and clean and I found hitting the ball particularly enjoyable with the Head Boom Pro.

I found the Boom Pro to be more comfortable than the Boom MP which may be explained by the heavier weight which absorbs more shock.

The tolerance to centering errors is quite correct for a 632 cm² frame and on my off-center hits, I found the shock absorption to be of a very good level.

There is a slight feeling of weight at the head of the racquet despite the balance at 31 cm, it helps to have power and does not interfere with handling, at least for me.

You don't really feel the weight of the racquet, but be careful to be sure you can handle 310 g over fairly long sessions and on the full course of matches.

Players I would advise the Head Boom Pro

I would recommend the Head Boom Pro to players :

  • with a good level of play, advanced players, maybe intermediate players but not beginners,
  • who are able to play with a racquet that weights 310 g unstrung during a whole match without fatigue in their arm,
  • with a good technique, rather big and loose swings,
  • who are able to use the weight of the racquet to generate power,
  • with a flat game and intermediate power or who use top spin with power, the racquet is really designed for the modern game with power and top spin,
  • who have a two-handed or one-handed backhand, the maneuverability is interesting for the one-handed backhand,
  • who are looking for an easy access to top spin,
  • who want a rather heavy racquet at the same time rather powerful,
  • looking for a good maneuverability, and excellent comfort and forgiveness.
