Head Boom MP tennis racquet review

This is my review of a brand new Head tennis racquet that will be available in January 2022, the Head Boom MP.

The boom line is presented by Head as a serie that consists of rather powerful racquets, comfortable and top spin friendly.

To the contrary of what I said in my video review, the Head Instinct serie is not replaced by the Boom, it continues to live, and the Boom is just another line among Head tennis racquets.

I have tested the racquet with a new Head string called Head Lynx Touch, an arm friendly monofilament string, strung for my test at 24 Kg / 53 lbs.

I give you my opinion on this racquet in this article !

The new Head Boom serie

At the time I write this articke, this new serie will consist of two racquets :

  • Head Boom MP,
  • Head Boom Pro.

Here are the specifications of these 2 racquets :

Head Boom MP Head Boom Pro
Weight (unstrung) 295 g. 310 g.
Balance 31,5 cm 31 cm
Head size 645 cm² 630 cm²
String pattern 16x19 16x19
Beam width 24 mm / 24 mm / 21 mm 22 mm
Length 68,5 cm 68,5 cm

At the time I write the article, Lorenzi Musetti tests the Head Boom Pro, customized to his needs, to see if he could switch to this racquet.

The shape of the Head Boom MP

The Head Boom MP has a special shape, a bit rounded at the top of the frame, where most players tend to hit the ball.

This shape will increase the access to top spin, as well as the tolerance and the comfort of the racquet.

The power of the Head Boom MP

As soon as I started playing with the Head Boom MP, I was surprised with the level of control given by the racquet, I expected something more powerful.

It's not difficult to play with this racquet, nevertheless, be careful with this little control side, that could reduce the power a bit too much for some players.

Overall, I didn't lack control for any of my shots.

For my serve, a weak shot for me, I lacked a bit of power, but it's more linked to my technique and to the fact that I come back after a long pause due to a shoulder surgery.

With a bit more training, I think the power level of this racquet could be fine for me on the serve.

In conclusion, the Head Boom MP is in my opinion a mid-powered racquet, rather easy to play, but with a control side that is present, so be careful if you're really looking for a very powerful racquet, you could lack some with this one.

Here is a comparison in terms of power with some other racquets :

More power

  • Babolat Pure Drive
  • Head Extreme MP
  • Wilson Burn, Ultra
  • Tecnifibre TFlash
  • Yonex Ezone 100

Similar power

  • Head Instinct MP, Speed MP
  • Yonex Vcore 100
  • Babolat Pure Aero

Less power

  • Head Prestige, Gravity, Radical
  • Babolat Pure Strike
  • Wilson Clash, Pro Staff, Blade
  • Yonex VCore Pro
  • head size < 645 cm²

Head Boom MP and spins

I had excellent sensations on my slice backhand, nice feeling and good control.

I found the Boom MP was rather spin friendly, as announced by Head.

The access to top spin is enhanced by :

  • the 645 cm² / 100 in² head size,
  • the shape of the frame a bit rounded at the height of the contact zone,
  • the 16x19 string pattern,
  • the maneuverability of the racquet.

Maneuvrability and stability

I found the Head Boom MP very easy to swing, partly as a result of the balance point located at 31.5 cm that makes the racquet rather head light.

Despite its rather light weight and that balance a bit towards the handle, I found the racquet rather stable.

In comparison with the Wilson Clash 100, that is rather close, I found the Head Boom MP more stable.

Head Boom MP comfort and tolerance

I found the Boom MP very comfortable.

The tolerance is fine also, helped with the 645 cm² head size and the shape a bit rounded.

New technologies used in this racquet, in particular "Auxetic" technology, might also play a role in these feelings.

Summary of my Head Boom MP review

The Head Boom MP is a mid-powered tennis racquet, easy to use, but it's not one of the most powerful.

The racquet is really easy to swing, the access to top spin is very good, it's comfortable and it offers a nice tolerance on off-centered shots.

It makes me thing a bit of a mix between the Head Gravity MP and the Head Speed MP ;

  • the shape a bit rounded like the Gravity MP,
  • the intermediate power like the Speed MP.

A bit like a more powerful Gravity MP with a better access to top spin and a control side still present.

Or a bit like a more tolerant and maneuvrable Head Speed MP with an easier access to top spin.

Players I would advise the Head Boom MP

Considering its accessible weight and its intermediate power, I think the Head Boom MP will be interesting for many players.

I would advise this racquets to players :

  • with an intermediate or advanced level, even good beginners,
  • with a versatile or modern game style,
  • able to generate at least a bit of power with their technique and their physical skills,
  • looking for an easy access to top spin,
  • looking for a racquet that is easy to swing, comfortable and tolerant.

This racquet could be interesting for players using :

  • a racquet that weights 300 g and that is a bit too heavy for them,
  • the Wilson Clash 100 and looking for more stability and a bit more stiffness,
  • the Head Speed MP ou the Radical MP and looking for a better access to top spin, more maneuvrability, more tolerance,
  • a powerful 645 cm² tennis racquet and looking for something less powerful with the same head size,
  • a low powered tennis racquet or a narrowed string pattern, looking for a 645 cm² frame not too powerful.
